Should You Date a Man with Potential?

Should You Date a Man with Potential_

“He got that ambition, baby, look at his eyes
This week he moppin’ floors, next week it’s the fries”

We’ve all laughed at the famous Kanye verses, but when it comes to dating someone with “potential” where do we really stand?

I used to pride myself on not being a gold digger, so much so that I frequently dated broke men.  Some were musicians, artists or entrepreneurs who frequently talked about their grand aspirations.  The hype sounded great in the first few dates, I was always intrigued and inspired by their stated ambition.  But after months of hanging out it was clear that the “ambition” was little more than talk without any tangible plans or work ethic.  Yet still I was weary to write off all artist and entrepreneurs as I was one myself.

Money & Relationships: Guest post from Know Longer Single

money & relattionships KnowLongerSingle

I’d like to introduce you to my blogger friends, fellow relationship bloggers Daryl and Dominique!  This week the Know Longer Single Youtubers have provided a guest post response to my article Money, How Much Does it Matter in a Relationship?

In the original post we asked the following questions and readers from around the country wrote in their responses on the topic of money & relationships.  Does it matter how much money your significant other makes?  Ladies, does it matter if a man makes significantly less money than you?  Would you date a guy who made less money?  If so would you marry him, all other things considered?  Men, does it matter to you how much money a woman makes?  If a woman made more money than you would that be an issue?

A few of the reader responses included:

“Money is as much about power and identity as it is about money. It’s less about who has the money, but more about, given our different values, how can we make this work… forever? ” –Female, 34, Houston, TX

“Money equates freedom to me. Freedom to venture, leisurely travel, give back, invest, build a business together, etc…..a lack of financial security and independence along with a drive to succeed are deal breakers.”                                           – Female, 33 – Chicago, IL

“It is not a problem to me if a woman makes more money than I do.  However, she needs to be cognizant of the limitations of my disposable  income.”   – Male, 32, Washington D.C.

Daryl & Dom are always fun to watch with a great dynamic and enlightening perspective.  Here’s what they had to say on the topic of money & relationships!

Daryl and Dominique met in 2015 and have been inseparable ever since. They both love to travel and are foodies at heart.  On their youtube channel Know Longer Single they give relationship advice while helping people navigate through the “single” phase of their lives and teaching them how to do life as a unit with their significant other.

Best and Worst Places for 1st Dates

best worst 1st dates

Contrary to popular belief modest first dates are better than extravagant first dates for several reasons.

The most extravagant first date I ever went on was to a lounge in Chicago.  I ordered a drink that came with a Bunsen Burner contraption.  My date ordered a drink that came in a plastic air filled pillow.  He had to pop the pillow which was filled with lavender aroma to get to the drink.  It was an experience to say the least.  Afterwards, we went to a jazz lounge to hear live music.  The night was spectacular and I went home smitten.  So why would I discourage extravagant first dates?  Here’s why:

Don’t Get Surf & Turfed this Valentine’s Day: 5 Ways to Protect Your Wallet

valentine's day money saving

When I was 23, young, broke and stupid I learned this term. It’s when you generously take someone out to dinner on a budget and they unexpectedly order the two most expensive things on the menu, the steak and the lobster.

At 23, I was dating this guy whose pattern was to always split meals with me whenever we went out. He was a fairly skinny guy but he said to manage his cholesterol he wanted to split meals. He also didn’t drink or ever order desserts or appetizers. Needless to say, whenever we went out for a meal the bill was consistently low.

On Valentine’s Day I decided I wanted to mix things up and take him out. Stupidly, I chose to take him to the John Hancock building 95th floor Signature Room. I had never been, but I’d heard it was amazing. Did I mention I was 23 and broke? I looked up the menu beforehand but of course fancy restaurants often don’t list prices on the online menu. I figured we’d probably order one $35 -50$ entre and share it like we normally shared meals. There’d be no appetizer, drinks, desserts etc. because he never wanted those things anyway.
